Contemporary Dance Technique - Remixed

This contemporary class is based on my experience in different styles of contemporary, modern and release techniques as well as floorwork and yoga.

The focus is on the body’s alignment and on working economically in movement through emphasis on direction, sequencing, impulse and fluidity. Part of working economically is the use of the centre and internal musculature, hence reinforcing and learning to access that power is a major objective.

The class usually starts by warming up at ground level: strengthening the centre and upper body for taking weight by travelling across the floor with set material or improvisations. With a strong centre we can move fluidly and economically on all levels.

We then move into verticality: alignment, thoroughly working feet, legs, arms and spine, learning Release Technique through specific set material.

Lastly we make a transition into movement which travels further through space: changing directions and levels, using impulse, sequencing and flow, learning set material which builds up to a final phrase that will end the class. Attention is always given to stretching afterwards to prevent injury.

"The most important for me is the feeling-free- and having-fun-factor – otherwise: Why do we dance?"

Partnering

1 + 1 = 1

Duets in dance

In the context of our workshop we want to deal with the theme „duets in dance“ together with our participants. – The duet, that is more than the sum of  the two duet-partners. In the encounter and involvement with „the other“ something more, third originates.

Harmonious, full of misunderstandings, powerful, tender, acrobatic... The opportunities are diverse. In our workshop we focus on the space two people share as their centre in an experiment of closeness. Through the spatial proximity the world within opens, the partners enter into a dialogue with each other,  that goes back to the basics.

After a collective, on-topic warm-up with exercises in awareness, grounding and „being-in-contact-with-yourself-and-your-partner“ we concentrate on partnerwork using different  means, techniques and ideas to create a duet and to improve our cooperation. The origin of the duet could be e.g. literary texts, memories, dialogue-excerpts from theatre plays or movies and various pieces of music.
